Election season is here, and the patriotic spirit seems to be a little lacking. So to get that patriotic spirit rockin’, I wrote this little thingy so you can show your colors on your Mac!
To use it, just do the following:
1) make a copy of your system file
2) launch bePatriotic
3) select the copy of your system file
4) after bePatriotic exits, move your old system into the trash
5) rename your copy of the system file 'System'
6) reboot
Your Mac will suddenly become patriotic!
If you suddenly feel that the effect is too much, do everything as above except when you launch bePatriotic hold down the option key.
Technical stuff
--------------
beP only works with System 7 & up, and will refuse to run if this is not the case.
What beP does is change one bit in the 'itlc' resource in your system file. To do this yourself, just use resedit to open up your system file & edit the resource yourself.
Getting another icon is a little more difficult. The icons are stored as 'kcs#', 'kcs4', and 'kcs8' resources. Since they've got the same format as the 'ics#', 'ics4', and 'ics8' icons, you can use ResEdit to make the 'icsX' icons , then use the hex editor to paste them into 'kcsX' resources. Be aware that you only have the bottom 9 lines to work with; the other lines are clipped.
beP can actually work on your existing system file. I don’t recommend it, though.

I wrote this after seeing the little keyboard flag on Harvard’s machines. I thought it was really neat, & hope you will too. It’s free, but donations are accepted :)
